황기(黃芪)는 황기(皇耆)라고도 한다. 고려 때의 이두향명으로는 수판마(數板麻)라 하였고 조선 초기에는 감판마(甘板麻)라 하였으나, 1600년대에 들어와서는 ‘ᄃᆞᆫ너삼불휘’ 등으로 변하여 1700년대에는 ‘단너삼’이 되었다. 이것은 너삼(苦參)과 비슷하되 맛이 달아 붙여진 이름이다.

일반인에게는 닭백숙이나 삼계탕의 주재료로 잘 알려져 있다. 백숙이나 삼계탕에 황기가 들어가느냐 들어가지 않느냐에 따라 맛이 차이가 나는데, 황기 특유의 풍미가 없으면 심심한 느낌이 난다.

황기는 ‘동의보감’과 ‘조선왕조실록’에 세자, 어린이 건강을 위해 사용했다고 기록됐다.

동의보감에서 황기는 ‘기가 허하여 나는 식은땀[盜汗]과 저절로 나는 땀[自汗]을 멎게 하고 어린이의 온갖 병을 치료하는 약재’로 소개됐다.

성질이 약간 따뜻하고 맛은 달며 독이 없으며, 몸의 겉에서 속까지 다 치료하는 상·중·하, 속과·겉, 삼초(三焦)의 약이 된다고 나와 있다.

뿌리는 약재로 이용하는데 약효성분은 폴리산(folic acid)·콜린(choline) 등이다. 동물실험에서는 중추신경계통의 흥분작용과 이뇨작용도 현저하였으며, 흰쥐에게 대량의 분말을 투여하였을 때는 신염(腎炎)의 발생을 억제시키고 단백뇨와 콜레스테롤혈증의 발생도 지연시켰으며, 혈압강하 작용도 인정되었다. 이 약은 약성이 온화하고 맛이 달다. 효능은 쉽게 피로하고 힘이 약하며, 음성이 낮고 맥박이 연약하고 땀을 많이 흘리는 사람에게 현저한 효능을 나타내고 있어서 예로부터 인삼 대용으로 많이 써왔다.

그리고 자궁하수·위하수·탈홍·자궁출혈에도 널리 이용되며, 체력을 항진시켜 주고 전신 근육의 긴장도를 높여주기도 한다. 그래서 한방에서는 많이 쓰이는 약에 속한다. 그러나 발열이 심할 때는 사용할 수가 없다.

민간에서는 닭에다 이 약을 넣고 달여 먹으면 식은땀을 흘리지 않고 체력이 증강된다고 하여 많이 쓰고 있다. 대표적인 처방으로는 기운이 없고 식욕을 잃은 사람에게 많이 활용되는 보중익기탕(補中益氣湯)이 있다. 소음인 체질을 가진 부인의 부인병 일체에 사용하는 처방으로 가미팔물탕(加味八物湯)이 있는데, 이 처방은 명나라 사람 공신(龔信)이 지은 『만병회춘(萬病回春)』에 수록된 팔물탕에 가감한 것인데 『동의수세보원(東醫壽世保元)』에 있는 팔물군자탕(八物君子湯)·십전대보탕(十全大補湯)도 이 팔물탕에 가미한 것이다.

우리에게 너무나도 친숙한 소음인 체질을 가진 사람이 기가 허약한 경우 사용하는 처방인 십전대보탕(十全大補湯) 등은 황기를 약재로 쓰는 대표적인 한방 치료 방법이다.

[소재정보]

초본으로 높이 80∼120cm이다. 잎은 어긋나며, 작은 잎 13∼23장으로 된 깃꼴겹잎이다. 턱잎은 피침형, 끝이 뾰족하다. 꽃은 총상꽃차례에 피며, 연한 노란색, 나비 모양, 길이 1.5∼1.8cm이다. 화관은 끝이 반쯤 벌어진다. 열매는 협과이며, 길이 2∼3cm, 밑으로 처진다.

전체에 잔털이 난다. 뿌리는 굵고, 깊이 들어간다. 줄기는 가지가 갈라지며, 높이 80~120cm다. 잎은 어긋나며, 작은 잎 15~23장으로 된 깃꼴겹잎이다. 작은 잎은 긴 타원형, 길이 1.5~2cm, 폭 0.3~0.8cm, 가장자리가 밋밋하다. 턱잎은 피침형, 끝이 뾰족하다. 꽃은 7~9월에 잎겨드랑이에서 난 총상꽃차례에 피며, 연한 노란색, 나비 모양, 길이 1.5~1.8cm다. 꽃자루는 길이 3mm쯤이다. 꽃받침은 종 모양, 끝이 5갈래로 갈라진다. 화관은 끝이 반쯤 벌어진다. 열매는 협과이며, 낫 모양, 길이 2~3cm, 폭 1.0~1.5cm, 밑으로 처진다.

황기는 약용 및 식용자원으로서 경제적 가치가 매우 높은 생물자원이기 때문에 국외 반출 승인 대상 생물자원으로 분류되어 해외 반출을 관리하고 있다.

한라산 정상 부근에 분포하는 제주황기 (Astragalus mongholicus var. nakaianus (Y.N. Lee) I.S. Choi & B.H. Choi)는 높이 20-50cm이다. 전체에 가는 털이 많다. 잎은 어긋나며, 깃꼴겹잎이다. 작은 잎은 5-10쌍, 넓은 타원형, 길이 5-8mm, 가장자리가 밋밋하다. 턱잎은 달걀 모양, 끝이 뾰족하다. 꽃은 잎겨드랑이에서 총상꽃차례로 피며, 나비 모양, 노란색이다. 열매는 협과이다. 전체에 가는 털이 밀생한다. 줄기는 밑동에서 여러 개가 한꺼번에 옆으로 뻗는다. 잎은 우상복엽으로 소엽은 5~10쌍으로 넓은 타원형이며 어긋나게 달린다. 황백색의 꽃은 잎겨드랑이에서 난 총상화서에 달린다. 열매는 협과이다. 제주도의 한라산 초원에 자라는 초본 식물이다. 줄기는 1m에 달하고, 잎은 기수우상 복엽으로 소엽은 좁은 타원형이다. 꽃은 잎의 겨드랑이에서 나오는 총상화서에 달리고, 7월에 황색으로 피며, 접형화관이다. 암술은 1개, 수술은 10개인데, 이 중 9개는 융합되어 있다. 열매는 꼬투리 모양으로 신장형의 종자가 들어 있다.
